Asset of the Month is a monthly e-subscription featuring a specific youth development topic.

March Asset of the Month:

Creative Activities - Young people spend three or more hours per week in lessons or practice in music, theater, or other arts.

The Importance of Creative Activities

For many young people, creative activities can fulfill the sparks or hidden flames that tap their true passions, motivate and inspire them to achieve and create, and keep them on a positive path. Youth who have sparks and are surrounded by people who recognize and support their sparks, have higher grades in school, are more socially competent, are more likely to volunteer to help other people, have a greater sense of purpose, and are less likely to experience depression.

United Way Funded Program Highlights.

United Way of Benton and Franklin Counties focuses on four major areas: education, health, safety, and self-sufficiency. Each month we share a success story about one of those areas.

SELF-SUFFICIENCY

YMCA: Childcare and Camp

The goal of this program is to provide year-round childcare services, after school programs, field trips, nutrition and exercise programs for working parents or parents who are going to school. Approximately 500 families utilize the childcare services annually. Recently, a single father of a child with autism shared that he was thankful for the peace of mind that the YMCA is giving him. Prior to the program, he feared that he would lose his job because he had to frequently leave work to pick his child up from school due to consistent behavior outbursts. Due to connections with staff and enjoying the YMCA program so much, the child's behavior at school has improved because he does not want lose his ability to attend and participate.
